I have to say, no spoilers, but the one repeated action that really bothered me in the Battlestar 2.5 episodes was the RAMPANT use of the initial sequence, followed by a little subtitle reading “48 hours earlier”. ENOUGH WITH THE FLASHBACKS, PEOPLE! Seriously, one episode was smoking the flashback crack, and just kept jumping backwards and forwards with ever-narrowing fields of intervening time (“72 hours earlier”, “36 hours earlier”, “22 hours earlier”, “3 hours earlier”).
I can’t tell if they think this is a really effective and suspense-building plot device, or if they’re running low on budget and are cutting costs by re-running the same film over and over and trying to mask it by having the repeated scenes act as the time-marking buffer between flashbacks.
Anyone else watching advanced episodes notice this? Am I alone in thinking it’s weak?
It’s not weak, it’s cool. Every time they go back to the recycled footage, it’s in a new context because of the information we’ve garnered in the intervening scenes, particularly in “Scar”.
It’s a good thing you don’t watch LOST or you’d be out of your mind by now. Or more out of your mind, anyway.
Good to know re: LOST. I’ll avoid ir like the plague.
I’ve heard a lot of people talk about it’s awesomeness, but have not yet managed to see a single episode or learn much about it other than that the plot has generated many theories.
I think your comment about the flashbacks is the final nail in the coffin of me never watching it, but yesterday’s television interview with one of the writers where he said that his mother’s theory is that the story is all a dream being had by the dog in the series was already nudging it towards the “never needs to be seen by me” column.
Which is a shame, because LOST is really a spectacular show (the pilot is one of the single best pieces of television ever produced, and its first ten minutes some of the best produced in any medium), and probably the best weird television since TWIN PEAKS (although it’s strangeness is much more subtle and low-key). But if you can’t handle BSG’s occasional flashbacks, it’s unlikely LOST will work for you, since its flashbacks are integral to its construction.
I can’t read any other comments, in case they’re spoilery, but I found the repeated flashback/flash forward thing in s1e4 “Act Of Contrition” annoying (how many times did they need to foreshadow the ejection clip? Is it foreshadowing if you show it 3 times before it happens?).
Also, I’m late to the party with this one, but what’s with the extended intro into the show?
1. Stock opening previouslys
2. Specific story arc previouslys
3. Opening scene/mini cliffhanger
4. Animated credits
5. Future previouslys (what? stop showing me the show before it happens!)
6. Are we there yet?
If that opening scene wasn’t tucked in there, I’d fast-forward through the whole mess.
