Notes from this Morning

1) Running to catch the train while clutching bongos is challenging, and makes you look like a total idiot.
Go idiocy!

2) I did a good job on finding suitable makeup and accessories today.
Go earrings and eyeshadow!

3) My cream Chuck Taylors look good with this outfit, but my feet are going to be ripe and stanky tonight as a result.
Go unbreathable canvas and rubber soles!

4) I remembered not only to bring in my Star Wars 4-6 VHS tapes for my cubicle neighbor Rosemary, but also to return ‘s long-borrowed David Sedaris book UMPROMPTED!
Go memory!

5) dropped off a HUGE number of toys that the Silver Snail is donating to the Federated Health online auction we’re doing at work next week! It was so exciting, there were about 8 boxes full of all sorts of high-quality Star Wars, Star Trek, Spider-man, Hulk, Lord of the Rings, Monty Python, Football, Nascar, Astronaut figures.
Rick, the guy in charge of the charity campaign had kind of shrugged and been like “whatever” when I told him I’d secured some toys for the auction, but he totally lost his mind when I opened up the boxes and started pulling out Saruman and Frodo figurines. He actually squealed, and then set about writing down Justin’s full name and address so that he could write him “the best thank you letter ever”.
Go charitable donations!

6) called last night to say he and have been shopping around for barongs to wear as groom and best man, respectively, at the wedding in two weeks. Now, while I’m all for making your wedding unique and suited to your own personality and tastes, I have some serious doubts about two dudes, sized 6’2″ and 6’7″ respectively, finding ready-to-wear, off-the-rack Filipino wedding gowns that will fit them.
I mean, dude, I lived with for a period of time, and met a good number of her family members, and ain’t NONE of those folks over six feet tall. Also? I love these guys, and they are manly men, but being manly sometimes comes with an abundance of natural, home-grown HAIR, and my cousin and his friend J. are somewhat hirsute in the chestular area, and barongs that I’ve seen online appear to me mostly translucent. Hair will show. There will be visible hair. Unless they wear undershirts, and then what’s the point? You lose all the nice, circulatory properties that make the barong an appealing choice for a summer wedding. Also? Last I heard, they haven’t bought their rings yet, so there’s that small detail to deal with as well. Ah, procrastination, it’s good to know you’re not just singling me out for your cruel attentions: you seem to plague my entire family.
Go last-minute wedding preparations!

  1. Oh, come on! Do you know how many non-Scottish dudes wear kilts to their weddings, just because they or their wives think kilts are sexy? MANY.

And Cluseau *was* born in a hot, humid climate, so it’s *sort of* related to his native culture.

Besides, there are LOTS of things worse than my cousin. Lots.

My main objections remain related to the essential nature and original purpose of the clothing: not constructed with tall, hairy dudes in mind.

  2. FYI, the barong is actually worn with a T-shirt underneath, even in the Philippines. 🙂

  3. I’m only half serious…that is why C didn’t pick a kilt for the wedding, event though he’s a second generation Scot. Not close enough.

Those shirts are kind of nice though…

  4. personally i think it’s a huge waste of time and money, especially this close to the date, to go wandering the big T for highly ethnic clothing. also, CJ could have told J. about being his best man a little earlier and what was involved. seems a bit impolite to make it a last minute decision.

as for culture theft, well, everyone does it all the bloody time. i hear it’s called ‘fashion’. I’m like eight generations removed from the Scots, but a kilt is a damn fine piece of air-conditioned clothing. as is a sulu for that matter.

  5. For those looking for a brief history of the Barong, here’s an excellent overview by a Toronto guy: http://www.wendyandjoey.com/blog/_archives/2005/4/20/599610.html

CJ’s dad wore one for his wedding, which is why CJ is thinking of one. We’re *definately* wearing undershirts, but as you can see, that’s the style. No embarassingly revealing peek-a-boo shirts for ME!

We tried on a few last night, and they fit surprisingly well. I too am familiar with the average Filipino stature, and was a little bit concerned, but that’s what XXL is for. 🙂 (and thank god, but I’m closer to 6’4″ than 6’7″)

I’m looking forward to tonight! Supreme geekery!

  6. agreed, says the filipina. come on, filipinos also happen to wear sweaters in 30 degree weather sometimes. so the undershirt thing is totally necessary…even if you are not ‘hirsute in the chestular area.’

if your friends need help finding barongs, i can always call tita ina 😉

also, i might be coming to toronto this weekend. just fyi.

  7. Dang, they could totally have used the help — but in the end they finally succeeded, though I think it was Not Fun.

  8. Totally exciting, dude! Give me a call at home or on my cell. I will email both numbers to you through your LJ email.

I have a CAR now, don’tcha know, so I can DRIVE to where you are (exciting). I will be downtown on Saturday for a haircut at 2pm, then there is a party at my house starting at 6pm and going all night on Saturday. Sunday I don’t think I have any special plans, other than packing to go to BC.

    *hugs*
