“Nature has not implanted any power in man that was not meant to be exercised at times, though too often our powers have been abused. The privilege, inborn and inalienable, that every man has, of dying himself, and inflicting death upon another, was not given to us without a purpose. These are the last resources of an insulted and unendurable existence.”
— Herman Melville, White Jacket

Yeah, I guess it’s not the most uplifting quotation I could have chosen.
I’ll have something more positive tomorrow. I will also attempt to make my inner state reflective of the more positive forthcoming quote. Not tonight, though. I’m feeling moody and grim. Don’t know why, exactly, but there it is.
Fascinating. That one quotation from a long dead ancient white guy sums up the whole concept of the suicide bomber in less than 100 words. And yet people think they do this because they simply hate our freedoms?
Really. Like some guy who has no hope for the future, is unable to feed his family, and is so desparate as to seriously consider suicide, cares whether some fantastically privileged people on the other side of the world get to vote in elections. You’d have to be pretty self-absorbed to believe that.
But I digress. Sorry for hijacking your comments page with my rant o’ the day. I swear it seemed relevant to your original post when I started typing.
And on that note:
