Ooh! I almost forgot to mention, I went to the government edifice at 900 Bay earlier this week to check out the new exhibit at the John B. Aird Gallery on the first floor. EVERYONE living close enough should go!!! It’s an excellent little show called Metamorphosis, and some of my favorite pieces were a limestone and glass sculpture called the Fisherman, a stool covered in matchsticks that looked like a combustible porcupine, a shovel that morphed into a snake, and a portrait made out of snakeskin, thread, beeswax and walnut dye.
Also, they are having a call for works that I’m considering entering called ‘The Little Prints’. Entered works must be original, created after January 2003, not previously exhibited at the Aird Gallery, and professionally mounted (framed where appropriate) and ready to exhibit.
The resulting exhibit will showcase small original limited edition prints by contemporary artists. Entered works can be no larger than 46 cm (h) x 46 cm (w) or 18″ (h) x 18″ (w). For this exhibition, a print is an art work that is wholly or primarily created using one of the following printmaking processes and techniques: lithography, woodcut, linocut, relief print, etching, aquatint, engraving, mezzotint, mono print or screen print. This broad definition opens
the exhibition to entries reflecting a wide variety of contemporary printmaking practices.
The entry fee is $25 for a maximum of two entries per artist. This fee is non-refundable and must be mailed with the entry form. Cheques or money orders should be made payable to: John B. Aird Gallery.
Three awards: First Prize, $500; Second Prize, $350; Third Prize, $150.
Artists will be notified of the results of the jury by telephone on Saturday, August 28 between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
Artists are informed of sales inquiries and must forward the gallery a 30% commission on sales.
The exhibition will be on view from August 31-September 24, 2005.
