Appliance-O-Rama

It’s been a blitz of buying new appliances lately. Last weekend Mum and I splashed out on a new front-loader washer and dryer and dining room set for the condo, this week JVL and I went hunting for a fridge, toaster oven and dining room set for home. No luck with the dining room set (it’s hard to find a 2’x3′ dining-height table!) but we scored a toaster oven at ye olde Canadian Tire and the most glorious ice box on earth at Caplan’s Appliances, an independent retailer just down the road from us that beat out both Sears AND the Sears Clearance Outlet for price, and was really clean and professional and fast to boot!

Justin (and, by proximity, me) are now the proud owners of an Amana 22 cubic foot stainless steel refrigerator with a pull-out bottom drawer, chef’s pantry, clear, adjustable shelving, and digital thermometer. Energy-Star compliant. For two grand. It may sound like a lot, but believe me, it’s totally worth it; this fridge is the Master of all reasonably-priced fridges (basically, of anything short of a Sub-Zero, Viking built-in, or a Jenn-Air). I can’t wait to get home to it!!

Ohhh yeaaaahhhh.

Also? EXCELLENT NEWS on the meeting-with-Professor front!!! You’ll perhaps recall the translation exam that I wrote in 2002? The one I got 85% on and that my beloved Professor had lost? HE FOUND IT! I do not have to re-write my translation exam! Glory be praised. Hallelujah. I am so happy I could spit. Now all I have to do is finish up and submit my partially-written essay some time between July 15th (my current “firm” due date) and August 1st (my “throat-cut” due date) and I’m done I’m done I’m done I really truly get my Masters at last hurray!

Who cares if I can’t access my Outlook personal folders because of the stupid PC refresh at work? Not me. Who cares if it’s so hot outside I could cook bacon on the handrails leading up the wheelchair ramp to my building? Not me. I’ve got a haircut booked at Philosophy (sorry, M! will go to Jie in July) for June 18th, I’ve got a vacation in BC and my cousins wedding coming up in two weeks, I’ve finished the much-dreaded yet strangely anticipated garage sale and now have loads less useless STUFF clogging up the basement. Life is good!

  1. 1) You don’t really hate me. You’re Melly, font of love and kindness. At best, you have green around the gills for my fridge, and possibly you’d like to meet it and see if it had any cheese it would like to give you one day. Which it will. And you shall.

    2) The fridge is kind of like a shiny, extravagant jewel set in tin-foil. The rest of the kitchen is still pretty freaking dreadful. And tiny. Not sure about the actual square footage, but it ain’t big. The cupboards are old and mostly brown. There’s a big hole in the wall behind where fridgey used to be. It needs several coats of paint, and we’re not sure it’s actually worth it, since JVL is kind of planning on pulling out the back wall and expanding anyhow. So, yeah, fridge good, kitchen bad. We don’t even have a kitchen table right now!

  2. That’s great news re: the exam – that would have *sucked* to have done that again. 🙂

Congrats! If you’re looking for regularity with the paper, Alyssa and I have established regular(ish) Monday study dates for the next few weeks into mid-July while she’s studying for the CSC and I’m prepping for the GMAT. You’re welcome to join us if you like!

  3. Wow -the fridge looks abfab. And what excellent news on the “Master degree” front. See what happens when you unclutter your life? You have room for huge refrigerators. Way to go, Justin… Have you checked your little furniture store yet for your kitchen dinette set?

  4. you know, when I buy a house(like, forever-from-now) I’m totally having you come over to help with the inevitable renovations.

Also, ’cause I’m slow – methinks the filters of the Canada-lander gov’t didn’t like the nodignity.com e-mail address ’cause I got BOUNCED, baby. wanna either a) e an alternate address to talk to or b) just send over the info for the con & the hotel again ’cause, um, I couldn’t find the entry where we were talking about it? eye=suck! (also eye = unable to access non work e at new gig. ::sigh::)

  5. Also, woo hoo with the Masters action! Now I have to be less stern that I have been heretofore.

That last word I give to you as a Masters gift.

  6. You’re right. I am green to the gills. The only thing that would make me MORE envious was if you’d purchased the side-by-side.

    *drool*

  7. Oooh! A study date. Sounds scrumptious. And after all, why did I buy a laptop if not to escape the doldrums of studying at home or in a library.

I’m going to make a stop at the department today to pick up a paper, then to Robarts and Vic to get books, then home to clean my “office” space (hysterical laughter).

Is next Monday on for one of these sessions? ‘Cause I’m in!
